This renowned painter wos born in Padang Tegal, Ubud. He confessed to be born in 1908. Other data, as written in the book of pengantar koleksi museum Neka,stated that he wos born 1908 while in Seni Lukisan Bali dalam tiga generasi mentioned that wos born in 1915. Due to these differences,he was confused. so later on he siad to his friend that he might be born in 1910. The median of those two different years.His name also written by others as "maregeg" (with an a)While he, himself,often wroteit as Mergeg (without e).
Meregeg was a painter with great reputation. in 1973,he received an award from Klungkung. in 1983, he was a recipient of Wijaya Kusuma award from Gianyar. in 1988, he acceptedan award from Balinase governor during Bali Art Festifal.in 1990, he received the Darma Kusuma medal.He strated to paint Wayang theme since 1920 in1936,through Pita Maha, he developed his technique and knowladge .But he was already close with Walter Spies-one of Pita Maha founders-several year before 1936.
As a mamber of Pita Maha, he often exhibited in collective exhibitions.In 1950s,he started to learn from Rudolf Bonnet. and when the Dutch painter founded golongan pelukis Ubud in 1956, he then joined up.together with this group he exhibited his works in Bali,Medan,Bandung,and Jakarta. His work once displayed in Netherelands and Japan.
The meticulous work of Meregeg attracted public's attention. His subjects are various action scenes of epicMahabrata. including the battle between Arjuna against Karna.It contains a valuable philosophy. In 1950 the Indonesia vice President Moh.Hatta had visited his studio.Long before this,President soekarno already and avid admirer of his works. |

He was born in Banjar Padang Tegal,Ubud,in 1932.He initially painted in the typical Ubud traditional style.later,afther interection with other painter of golongan pelukis Ubud association,his forms develoved the spetial,'volumetric' sense. he renders human figures almost realistically. yet the traditional decorative elements remain strong in his works.He adopts various thames, ranging from drama gong scanes,gambuh performances,and through the crowd at the marketplace.
He has taken part in very many exhibitions. In 2005 he contributed work for an exhibition of Gianyar painting at YDBA Gallery. Ding was born in Padang Tegal,Ubud,In 1920,to a poor family.In 1940,Walter Spies, A germent painter living in Bali,encouraged ding ti learn to paint on lontar leaves at the gedung Kirtya library in Singaraja.Here Ding learned how to make engraving on the leavesusing a knife.At home he painted with tempera on canvas. In Ubud,He was known as the pioneer of wayang painting on lontar, He died 1996.His tampera on canvas owes much to I ketut Badung.Formerly often featuring wayang stories in his painting,once he joined the Pita Maha Art organitation,and with Rudolf Bonnet's guidance.Ding begen painting fishes in the water and birds living free in nature.But there were moments when he would go back to the wayang theme.
He consistently contributed o exhibitions by Pita Maha as wall as by the annual Bali Art festival at Bali art center in Denpasar. He also exhibited in Medan,Bandung and Jakarta together with fellows members of golongan pelukis Ubud group of painters.Several of his work were exhibited in the USA,New zealand and the Netherlands.
In 1991 he received the "wajah Seniman Tua" art aword from the thirteenth Bali art festival.In 1990 he received the Wijaya Kusuma Award from Gianyar regency.He died in 1996.
